Various stages of learning to play the poker game

Countless volumes have been written on the subject of playing poker.  These books vary from beginners’ guides to works detailing complex strategies for winning the game. Unlike other popular casino games poker does not solely rely on chance and is therefore one of the few games a good strategy will work on.

For beginners, the rule books and beginners guides will be the best place to start before attempting to play the game for real cash. To enter into a game of poker without at least a basic understanding of the rules and terminology used playing poker is a surefire way to lose. Beginners’ guides and rule books come as eBooks that are free to download as well as printed hardcopies which you can buy at your favorite bookstore. The information in both is about the same, so if given the choice a free eBook would work just as well as a bought printed version. However, some readers prefer reading books they can hold in their hands so it boils down to a matter of taste.

The more advanced player would do well to study some of the available strategy guides in order to increase their winning potential. These guides are available as hardcopies, but also as eBooks. Be wary of the free ones as they are most likely to be filled with outdated information or techniques that over time already has become common knowledge, with downloadable eBooks that you have to pay for it’s not always a safe buy either. Lots of eBooks are written for the sole purpose of generating fast cash and contain no real information you can apply. In order not to fall victim to one of those scams it is recommended to only buy books from reputable authors, of which there are many. In other words; always check the source before purchasing a strategy guide on poker.

Experienced poker veterans and other advanced enthusiasts of the game will do well to study the books on the psychology behind playing poker. While those books won’t teach you anything about the game itself you will gain a lot of knowledge about player behavior and learn why they do what they do during the game. This will benefit players greatly when playing the game itself. Books on the psychology behind poker assume a basic knowledge of the game at the very least, and are meant to expand on the skills of the player. Therefore they are either to be used in combination with the strategy and rule books or after the player has gained enough experience to utilize the applied psychology.
